As I’ve admitted on many occasions before, I’m not just ‘behind’ on current pop culture, I’m living in an entirely different century.
Have I seen the new Star Wars movie? Nope. Have I binge-watched the most popular current shows on Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, etc.? Negative. In fact, not only haven’t I watched them, I can’t even name them!
So, I suppose it should come as no surprise to find out Cardi B is just a name to me. If I’ve heard her music, it was while I was out in public, just part of the ambient background noise which served as a soundtrack to the errand at hand. I’ve seen a picture or two, and I know she’s a rising star, but that was about it – until someone leaked a video which purportedly shows Cardi tweaking in the buff.
Yes, it’s sad but true: The surest way to wind up on my radar is to have your name wind up in a headline which also contains the words “sex tape” or “porn.”
Shut ‘Em Down And Move On
When someone fucks with you on the internet, there are several ways to respond.
The worst way, I think, is to appeal to their sense of decency, or try to get a troll to feel bad about what they’ve done. For a lot of trolls, making you feel miserable is the whole point; if you let them know they’ve succeeded, it just fuels them to continue.
Another option is to ignore the asshole(s) entirely – but it’s one thing to ignore trolls when you’re a nobody like me, and quite another when you’re a famous person trying to build a career, and who has a brand to protect.
The best option for dealing with trolls for someone in Cardi B’s position, and the path she appears to have chosen, is to shut them down and move on. Of course, to do it, you need to have the right attitude and a couple good lines in hand.
“People keep posting the nude videos of me like if I wasn’t a stripper before,” Cardi tweeted on Christmas. “You know there’s videos of me stripping with my titties & ass out on YouTube already right? Anyways I know I know I got a nice body right.”
If you’re the troll fucking with her, that’s got to be a little disheartening to read. Not only have you failed to make her miserable, she’s now called attention to the fact your little twerk tape leak is completely passé. You’ve been scooped by YouTube for fuck’s sake.
And if that’s not enough to let a troll know he’s failed at his mission to rile you up, you can always post a fake sex tape of your own creation to mock the whole notion of being bothered by their bullshit.
Or Maybe Shut ‘Em Down, Lawyer-Up And Make A Hit Song
There’s another option for dealing with trolls, if they cross certain lines and you have the necessary funds to employ the strategy: You can sic your attorneys on them.
Cardi’s attorney, Scott Mason, doesn’t appear to have said much to TMZ about the situation, other than the video was illegally obtained and her legal team has begun a full investigation to determine the identity of those responsible for the leak.
We’ll see what comes of Cardi’s pursuit of legal action against the tape-leaker(s), but in the meantime, my sense is she’s not going to lose much sleep over the whole thing, even if the rumors are true that the twerking clip is just the beginning and there’s a full-blown sex tape which could follow.
“I’m just going to make things positive out of a bad situation,” Cardi tweeted on Boxing Day.
So far, so good, I’d say.
