So I’ve been seeing some pretty sensational headlines in the media about how all women are essentially bisexual or lesbians. Apparently according to these articles, straight women don’t exist.
Uhm… What?
I’m pretty sure. Nay I am 100% sure that straight women are a real thing you guys. Declaring otherwise, aside from being untrue, is also highly condescending, as if women aren’t able to determine themselves how they feel and identify.
But let’s back up a little
Where the hell is this information coming from? I mean, what prompted these news outlets to shout out loud that straight women are essentially a figment of our collective imagination? According to The Daily Beast these headlines come from a new study in The Journal of Personality and social Psychology led by Dr. Gerulf Rieger of University of Essex.
“The supporting evidence doesn’t even come from the study’s original findings, it comes from the introductory literature review. By scholarly standards, some of this research is ancient history.”
In a study by Dr. Meredith L. Chivers in 2007, she found that straight women respond “about the same to both sexes” when viewing videotaped stimuli of genital intercourse, masturbation, and nude exercise. In order to determine bodily responses, she used vaginal photoplethysmograph – something that is not only just hard to spell and pronounce, but also used to monitor arousal. Apparently in straight women, more than any other group, their body responses did not correspond with their self-reported orientations.
So straight women don’t know their sexual orientation?
Well, that’s what the headlines wants you to believe. Apparently straight women’s vaginas will respond to almost any sexual stimulation, even chimpanzee sex. Yup. Soo… straight women are also into bestiality? How about more like, human sexuality is complex. More complex than just a simple headline.
And trying to determine a person’s sexuality cannot be done simply by inserting a dildo like device into their nether regions and then measured on a chart. In fact, Chiver’s research has also shown that vaginal photoplethysmography isn’t fully accurate in predicting self-reported arousal. Which basically means that there are situations where your vaginal blood flow might suggest you’re aroused but you don’t actually feel aroused.
Complex sexuality
Female heterosexuality is not as straightforward as that of male heterosexuality. I think we can safely agree to that these days given the amount of research there is out there.
I would say, the safest way to determine if a woman is straight or not, or is sexually fluid, then the best thing to do is straight up ask her. I’m sure she knows more than some device where she stands. And even if she wants to experiment a little, that doesn’t automatically make her bisexual or a lesbian. Just means she’s experimenting. And that is that.
