Say what you will about Kim Kardashian (and god knows I’ve written plenty of catty, mean things about her, myself), most of her ‘transgressions,’ such as they are, have been minor and trivial.
As a woman who has spent close to half her life working in and around the adult entertainment business, I might have been unimpressed by the deceitful song and dance surrounding Kim’s sex tape (the it was released over her strenuous objections, when in fact she was paid millions to secure her permission), but I’m not about to view the making of the tape in the first place as some horrid, unforgivable sin.
I don’t know too much about any of the other Kardashians, but so far as I know, none of the rest of them has done anything too terrible – until recently, that is.
No, I’m not talking about some who-gives-a-shit wardrobe malfunction, or a mere social media dissing of some other celebrity. I’m talking about Rob Kardashian doing something which may well count as a bona fide criminal act – namely, an act of revenge porn.
Not cool, Rob. Not cool at all.
This Is More Than ‘Disappointing’
People reports the rest of the Kardashian clan is “deeply disappointed and frustrated with Rob” over his actions. While I’m glad to hear they disapprove, I’m not sure disappointed and frustrated are strong enough words to apply here. Shocked and aghast come to mind, as do sickened and disgusted.
That said, other information coming from the same source suggests the Kardashians do have a pretty good sense of how far-reaching and damaging Rob’s actions could be, and not just with respect to the legal peril he may have put himself in.
“At this stage, the primary concern is protecting Dream (Rob and Blac’s 34 weeks-old daughter) from all this nastiness,” the source said.
This is a worthy concern, of course. Regardless of what one thinks of Blac Chyna or Rob Kardashian, I think we can all agree a toddler is both ill-equipped and entirely undeserving of having to deal with the shitstorm of drama being created by her parents. And make no mistake, her mom’s actions aren’t helping to quell the ongoing social media soap opera, either.
All Publicity Is Good Publicity… Until The Court Gets Involved
Some observers are questioning whether this whole revenge porn kerfuffle might be a trumped-up publicity ploy, just another means of keeping Rob and Chyna’s names in the headlines. This seems unlikely to me, but if I were the person responsible for paying Rob’s legal bills, it’s also the explanation I would most want to be true.
As it stands, there are several different ways this all could end badly for Rob, including three different kinds of courtroom he could be summoned to.
First, there’s the possibility of criminal charges under California’s revenge porn law, although legal experts are divided in their opinions as to how easy it would be for prosecutors to make charges stick.
Alternatively, Chyna could sue Rob in civil court, where she’d be confronted by a lower standard of liability (preponderance of the evidence vs. beyond a reasonable doubt) but would still need to prove damages.
Finally, Chyna could use Rob’s actions against him in family court to argue he’s an unfit father, and/or a threat to her, with either argument having a decent chance to resonate, should the presiding judge see revenge porn as a more serious matter than consensual over-sharing of private moments, something of which both Chyna and Rob appear to be guilty.
As for what Chyna will do, so far it sounds like she’s keeping her options open.
“I am exploring all legal remedies and protections available to my client at this time in attempts to best advise her on how she may want to proceed,” Chyna’s attorney, Walter Mosley said in a recent statement to the media.
The Foundations Of The Ultimate Reality Show?
Going back to the idea of this whole thing being a publicity ploy, one way I could see it working out well for all involved would be if it’s a set-up for the ultimate reality show: A celebrity courtroom showdown which would be part Court TV, part Keeping Up with the Kardashians and part American Idol.
Each new episode, a witness would testify as the world watched live. At the end of the episode, the audience, not a judge, would decide whether the testimony should be admitted as evidence, or down-voted out of the case.
By season’s end, the international jury of reality TV viewers would be ready to render a verdict. To provide a most unexpected and sensational twist, Donald Trump would emerge, rose in hand, to declare a winner of the lawsuit. (Hey, this is reality television we’re talking about here; we don’t need no so-called judge!)
In the end, the winner would get custody rights, cash damages, and the guarantee of appearing on the next season of Celebrity Courtroom Showdown, albeit merely as a presenter and host, rather than as a party to the lawsuit.
And since this is reality television, the loser wouldn’t be entirely left out in the cold, either; he or she would just be put on ice until the next edition of Marriage Boot Camp: Reality Stars, provided they could cast a new significant other with whom to feud on social media by the time filming began.
